Granola and Oats Packaging Solutions

Granola and oats products are today packaged extensively in zippered doypack packaging. This type of packaging, which allows consumers to reclose the product after opening, has become an industry standard in terms of ease of use and preservation of product freshness. The pouch dimensions preferred by many brands in the market are also very close to each other, which allows high-capacity production lines to operate efficiently.

Oats and granola products are generally packaged between 250 g and 500 g. While 500 g pouches are widely preferred for oats products, granola products are mostly presented in weights of 250 g and 350 g. Although there are many different granola varieties such as plain, with honey, with fruit pieces, or with chocolate chips, the physical properties and pouch dimensions of the products often show similarities.

Since this product group requires high-precision weighing, it is generally dosed with multi-head electronic weighers. The products are fed to the weighers with the help of bucket elevators, where they are precisely weighed and transferred to the packaging machine. In mixed products such as granola with chocolate chips or fruit pieces, the components are mostly fed into the system by being mixed homogeneously beforehand in a mixer.

In lines using multi-head weighers, throat-type metal detectors placed between the weigher and the packaging machine are quite common. In many applications, these systems offer a more economical solution compared to x-ray systems, while they can also be easily integrated into the product flow. Another important issue to consider in granola and oats products is dust control. The products can spread dust into the air by forming fine particles on the surfaces they contact. If these dusts are not extracted from the correct points, accumulations may occur inside the machine, leading to cleaning, maintenance, and performance problems in the long term. Therefore, an effective dust extraction system is one of the important components of a successful packaging line.
