Protein Powder Packaging Solutions

Protein powders are today presented predominantly in zippered doypack pouches and zippered flat bottom pouches. Besides these, 3 or 4-side sealed sachet pouches are also widely used, especially for single-use portions. The most common choices for packaging structure in protein powder packaging applications are PET+PE aluminum laminated or PET+PE metalized barrier films. These packagings extend shelf life by protecting the product from moisture, oxygen, and external factors, while also providing a premium appearance.

In protein powder packaging applications, doypack pouches are mostly used in weights between 200 g and 500 g, while flat bottom pouches are generally used in 500 g weights. Single-use sachet pouches are mostly preferred in the 20–30 g range. The variety of sizes is less compared to many other products, and most brands produce with one or two standard packaging dimensions. Especially in doypack and flat bottom packaging, generally a single size is used for each pouch type, while some brands use two different sizes.

Protein powders belong to the group of non-free-flowing, fine powder products with low fluidity. Therefore, they are dosed with auger filling systems, and product feeding is carried out via screw conveyors or vacuum conveying systems. Due to low fluidity, optimizing both the agitator and filling screw designs specifically for the product is of great importance for a precise and stable protein powder packaging process.

Auger filling systems work on a volumetric basis and aim to fill the same volume in each cycle. For this reason, the product must be mixed homogeneously during the production stage. Different densities occurring within the same volume can cause weight variations. Therefore, utilizing a conveyor-type checkweigher (weight control scale) is one of the most critical equipment parts of protein powder packaging lines. In terms of product safety, the most effective solution is to perform foreign matter inspection by using a conveyor-type X-ray inspection system at the pouch exit.
